Programme Director, Waikato Institute of Technology
Born in New Zealand, Tony O’Brien has spent most of his career working internationally.
His working career started with IBM Australia. He subsequently joined Trade New Zealand (now New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) and was posted to Canada as Trade Commissioner and Consul General in 1999 and Senior Trade Commissioner, Europe in 2003.
In 2005, Tony joined Fletcher Building and became General Manager, Europe for Fletcher Building Roof Tile Group, where he oversaw the rapid growth of its European division and the greenfield investment in a $20m metal roof tile manufacturing plant, in Hungary.
Tony joined the Waikato Institute of Technology on his return to New Zealand in 2012 and since 2015 he has been directing the New Zealand – China Vocational Education and Training Model Programme (Sino -NZ Model Programme). He has been a Director of the Waikato Chamber of Commerce since 2013.
Tony has tertiary qualifications in Science (Waikato) and Law (Sydney). He has attended the Queen’s University Executive Programme (Canada) and Oxford Said Business School Financial Management Programme (UK).
Tony lives in Cambridge, is married to Irena and has three children. He is a keen cyclist and has recently got back into flying.
