Internationalisation strategies expound the importance of New Zealand students studying overseas. The benefits of studying abroad and gaining intercultural competence are well established. But the challenge remains: How can we drive growth, overcome perceived barriers, and push our students out of their comfort zones?

Over the past 12 months, the University of Waikato’s Study Abroad and Exchange team have implemented a range of campus initiatives designed to raise awareness of the Waikato OE student exchange programme. The results have been dramatic: outbound mobility has doubled, students from a wider range of faculties are participating, and students are choosing to study in more non-traditional destinations.

In this practical session, we share the ideas and initiatives that made a positive impact, many of which can be implemented with limited resources. Attendees will come away equipped with tools and strategies to grow outbound student mobility.
